THE
PROJECT
The
“NUCLEAR TRANSPORT: ENVIRONMENTAL AND DEMOCRATIC ASPECTS” project is a
joint initiative of the Bulgarian and Romanian environmental non-governmental
organizations ZA ZEMIATA (For the Earth) and ECOSENS. It aims to
raise public awareness in Bulgaria and Romania on issues connected with
the storage and management of radioactive waste worldwide and in the region.
The project concentrates particularly on the problem of the transportation
and the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel from the “Kozloduy” Bulgarian
nuclear power plant.
The
main goals of the project are:
-
To support
the decision making institutions in Bulgaria and Romania in their efforts
to arrive at the most effective resolution to this urgent problem, and
thus help the countries move forward in the process of their accession
to the European Union;
-
To introduce
the public participation principle into the decision making system;
-
To develop
cooperation among sectors (NGOs – government – industry).
Our
main activities include:
-
Conducting
social research in the regions of Bulgaria and Romania, which are closely
affected by the process of production and transportation of nuclear materials.
The survey aims to determine the level of knowledge and attitude of the
population towards this transportation;
-
Organizing
of speaker tours in the towns of the same regions, which for Bulgaria are:
Lom, Kozloduy, Oriahovo, Svishtov and Rousse; and for Romania are: Giurgiu,
Bucharest, Galati and Bacau.
-
Production
and dissemination of publications in the Bulgarian, English and Romanian
languages, targeting the general public, as well as the environmental and
citizens’ groups;
-
Public
hearings, which are to be carried out in the both capitals - Sofia and
Bucharest.
The
project “NUCLEAR TRANSPORT: ENVIRONMENTAL AND DEMOCRATIC ASPECTS” is financed
by
THE
REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER FOR CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE, Szentendre,
Hungary.
