CLIMATE CHANGE. THE PROBLEM
Global warming is a growing concern, not only for scientists, but
the general public. Temperatures at the Earth’s surface have increased by an
estimated 0.6ºC over the 20th century. The 1990's were the hottest
decade of the entire century. Scientists agree unanimously that the warming
is largely due to emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases
responsible for the greenhouse effect. These gases are the result of human
activities such as industrial processes, fossil fuel combustion,
deforestation, etc.

GLOBAL POLICY PROCESS. THE KYOTO PROTOCOL
At the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, countries from all over the
world committed themselves to reducing greenhouse gases emissions to
a level “not leading to dangerous climate change”. These commitments are stated

CLIMATE CHANGE AND BULGARIA
Bulgaria ratified the UN Convention on Climate Change in 1995 and the
Kyoto Protocol in 2002. Our country is committed to reducing greenhouse gases
emissions by 8% in 2008-2012 compared to the 1988
